Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian (Canadian-American) is a feminist media critic, public speaker and Canadian. She is the founder of Feminist Frequency which includes videos and comments on depictions of women's roles in popular culture. Anita Sarkeesian is an award-winning Canadian-American feminist media critic as well as blogger. Feminist Frequency is an educational site for non-profit organizations that investigates representations of women in narratives from popular culture. The challenge of destroying stereotypes regarding women is her main focus. In addition, Sarkeesian discusses issues of specific harassment of women on the internet and for other groups which are left out. Sarkeesian holds a York University master's in social theological, philosophical and political thought. Alongside being an acclaimed public speaker, she has given speeches at the TEDxWomen XOXO Conference and United Nations Broadband Working Group. From an early age Sarkeesian was captivated by issues of gender identity as well as feminist ideas. While still at school in 2009 she started her Feminist Frequency website. Someone who hoped to create a web series that examined the gender representation of video games was targeted in an internet-based campaign. She was not deterred by the harassment, the fact is that it only bolstered her determination to be feminist and media critic. Sarkeesian has been awarded several awards for her contributions to the cause of feminism. Anita Sarkeesian has been a media critic for many years and was the creator of Feminist Frequency. The educational non-profit explores the role of women within the popular culture stories.
