Madekwe was born in South London, England into an ethnically diverse family. Both her parents were both English. Her family was raised on a south London council estate and attended The Brit School at age fourteen. She was a student of acting at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, London. While attending the academy, she performed in numerous stage productions, including The King Henry V playing Princess Katherine as well as Wuthering Heights portraying Catherine Earnshaw.
Madekwe's acting career began in the series Storm Damage. Over the past few years Madekwe's appearance in Teachers as well as Doctors. Madekwe landed her first motion-picture role in the Woody Allen movie Cassandra's Dream, opposite Colin Farrell and Ewan McGregor. Ashley Leggat is a Gemini-nominated actress who was raised in the large family. She was the daughter of Roy and Patty Leggat.
